A Note from Nelson DeMille
The Book Case

I haven’t written a Newsletter for a while because I’ve been busy writing my latest, THE PANTHER. As you may recall, this is a John Corey/Kate Mayfield book and it is set in Yemen, a country that is now in turmoil. My intention was to go to Yemen for research, but the situation there is still unsettled and unsafe, so instead I went to the beach.

THE PANTHER was due to be published in Spring 2012, but now it looks like it will be published in September 2012, in time for the holidays. Also, that gives everyone enough time to finish the book before the world ends on December 21, 2012.

Meanwhile, you can listen to a new short story I’ve written. Here’s the info:
Newly released Nelson DeMille Short Story!
THE BOOK CASE published November 1st
In this story, we see John Corey in his early years as an NYPD Detective, before he became involved with the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force.
Available as AudioBook download only.
Read by Scott Brick 1hr 58 minutes
Please download this. It’s a very good story and it’s cheap.

Also, here’s an email I received from a sharp-eyed lady:

Hi Nelson,
I just noticed that a copy of THE LION’S GAME was very clearly shown in a bookcase over the shoulder of actress Zooey Deschanel on her new TV show New Girl. Season 1 Episode 2 – Kryptonite at 20.12 minutes
Kind regards,
Lisa

I hope they don’t send me a bill for “Product Placement.”

I haven’t gotten many reader emails through my website for many months, and I began to think my fans had all abandoned me. Then I remembered that I’d shut down my mailbox for a while, which explains why no one is writing, but the mailbox is open again if you’d like to drop me a line or two telling me how much you enjoy buying my books. Remember – you don’t have to read them. You only have to buy them. In fact, I’ve downloaded all my books into my e-reader and I haven’t read any of them. And when I’m in a bookstore I always buy one or two of my books, just to see them rung up on the cash register. And once or twice a month I buy a few of my books from an e-retailer, and I get excited when the package arrives. You should do this, too. It’s very satisfying, good for the economy, and it will bring you good luck up until December 21, 2012.

And don’t forget, the Mystery Writers of America Annual Anthology was published in April. The title is THE RICH AND THE DEAD. I bought this book the day it came out and I read every story, and loved them all. Especially my own. In fact, I am the editor of the anthology, so, of course, I loved all the stories that I picked. You will, too.

And finally, don’t forget, my latest, THE LION is now available in the oversized easy-to-read, easy on the wallet trade paperback edition, and PLUM ISLAND was reissued in August as an oversized paperback. Both books are also available as an AudioBook and an e-book.

All my books make wonderful Thanksgiving gifts. Better than a stupid pumpkin candle. Those things really stink.

Nothing new on the movie front, but I hope to have something to report in December. If not, I’ll make something up.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and wonderful Thanksgiving. And for those men and women serving overseas, I thank you for your service and wish you a safe and speedy return home.

June 2011
A Note from Nelson DeMille
The Lion
In my May Newsletter I reported that German designer Karl Lagerfeld was coming out with a perfume called Paper Passion that smells like books.  Quoting from a German newspaper, I wrote, "The fragrance will have a fatty note, probably along the lines of linoleum."

Well, apparently someone at Lagerfeld has come to their senses, (pardon the pun) and Mr. Lagerfeld put out a statement saying this was a misunderstanding or perhaps a translation error.  There will be no such perfume.  Rumor has it, however, that Mr. Lagerfeld, who is a book lover and collector, may be working on a perfume that smells like binding glue.  More on this as I attempt to translate the next press release from Germany.

Also from my May Newsletter: My friend and fellow novelist, Alafair Burke, is running an awards contest this month on her website, called the First Annual Duffer Awards.  I'm delighted to announce that my character of John Corey has been nominated for Most Likely to Save the World.  Readers can vote online here.  And you can also post your comments stating why John Corey should get the Duffer Award in this category.  Please visit Alafair's website and Vote For John.  He needs the ego reinforcement.  Me, too.

As you know, the trade paperback edition of The Lion was published by Grand Central Publishing on June 7, and it's leaping off the shelves, clawing its way onto bestseller lists, and getting roaring acclaim.  Got it?  As I said last month, this is an excellent beach read, and in light of all the current turmoil in the Mideast, it's a very timely book.

And speaking of turmoil in the Mideast, as you know, I was supposed to go to Yemen to research my book-in-progress, titled The Panther which is set mostly in Yemen.  But if you've been following the news, you'll know that the situation there has escalated, and that the presidential palace in the capital, Sana'a, has been rocketed, and the president, Ali Abdullah Saleh has been wounded.  Also, there are gun fights raging in several cities.  Well, sorry to have missed the rocketing of the presidential palace you don't see that everyday but I think the sound of AK-47 fire might bring back some unpleasant memories of my time in Vietnam.  So my trip is still on hold, though my travel agent tells me that hotel prices in Yemen have never been lower.  Food, water, and medical services, however, could be a problem.  I'll keep an eye on the Yemen Tourist Board website.

Another commercial break: three of my earlier novels, By the Rivers of Babylon, Cathedral, and Mayday (co-authored with Thomas Block) are now available in the larger trade paperback edition for the first time this month.  These are great old favorites and even if you've read them, this is a very handsome edition for a good price, and each book has a new Foreword by the author.  That's me.  The forewords alone are worth the price of the book.  All four of these trade paperbacks together will make an excellent Father's Day gift.  Available as an eBook, AudioBook, or from your online retailer, or in bookstores.

Also as announced last month, I attended the Hunter College Writers' Conference in Manhattan on Saturday, June 4 for a keynote talk with my good friend Lewis Burke Frumkes, and also a panel discussion with bestselling authors Stuart Woods, Heywood Gould, and my pals, Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark.  Lewis runs the Writers Program at Hunter and he organized the Conference which was a smashing success.  Published writers and aspiring writers came from all over the country as did book lovers, Hunter College students, and people off the street who were looking for the subway entrance.

Lewis presented me with a beautiful, limited edition gold-nibbed Parker pen, which was generously donated by the Parker Pen Company.  The listed price of this pen is an astonishing $3,000 and I promised Lewis that I'd sign my next publishing contract with it.  It might be worth more than the contract.  This is the kind of small, expensive item that I sometimes have bad luck with, so I clipped it securely to my inside jacket pocket where I hope it still is when the jacket comes back from the dry cleaner.

My last known public appearance of 2011 will be the East Hampton (Long Island) Library's 7th Annual Authors Night fundraiser, on Saturday, August 13, 5:00-7:30 pm.  This is a great evening for a great cause.  I.e. to support the public library in the wealthiest town in America.  Attending will be lots of wonderful authors, and wonderful me.  Also signing that evening will be my friend and neighbor Susan Lucci, who will be autographing her new bestselling memoir, All My Life.  This is a great book, made more so by her mention of me in the acknowledgments.  Plus you'll see a group photo which includes my lovely wife.  For more info on this event, click here.

This is Audiobook Month, and the Audio Publishers Association has asked me to mention this, and to say, "Buy Nelson DeMille Audiobooks," or maybe just buy Audiobooks.

I like Audiobooks because they're easy on the eyes.  Also, they're hands-free.  You can have a beer and a cigar while listening with your eyes closed.  But not while driving.

Also, Audiobooks are great for the commute to work.  I have a short commute about six minutes and I've been listening to War and Peace for about three years now, and I can't wait to hear how it ends.

Scott Brick narrates most of my books, so when I shared a stage with him at the Fort Myers Reading Festival in March, I asked him to narrate The Lion to the audience.  Sixteen hours later he was still reading to a mostly empty auditorium, but the night cleaning crew was entranced and they hung on every word.  Scott is good.

A good rule when buying books for friends is this: paper books and eBooks for the hard of hearing; Audiobooks for the visually impaired and illiterate.  Comic books for "Jersey Shore" fans.  There's a format for everyone.

Not much movie news this month, but I did watch The General's Daughter on DVD a few weeks ago and I'm still impressed with how well this movie was adapted from my novel of the same name, and how well it's stood up to time.  If you buy the DVD of The General's Daughter you'll see an interview with me, and you can be the judge of who is better looking me or John Travolta.  And buy the book while you're at it.

As I said, Father's Day is approaching and Dad wants an autographed DeMille book.  As I do with every holiday, permission is hereby granted for you to forge my signature or clip it from this Newsletter and present the signed book to Pop with a nice greeting from me.  And remember, every time you buy one of my books, you're also giving a gift to me.  Thank you.

July 4th, Independence Day, is approaching, and I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday.  This is a good time to reflect on our many blessings, and most of all on one word: Freedom.

Nelson DeMille
May 2011
A Note from Nelson DeMille
The Rich and the Dead Lots of good news since my April Newsletter.  First, it was announced in a German newspaper that designer Karl Lagerfeld is creating a perfume that smells like books.  I'm assuming there was a great demand for this fragrance.  It's called Paper Passion and "it will be sold inside a hardcover book with pages hallowed out to hold the flacon."  Also, "the fragrance will have a fatty note, probably along the lines of linoleum."

Okay.  Can't wait to buy that for my wife.  You can't make this stuff up.

My friend and fellow novelist, Alafair Burke, is running an awards contest in June on her website, called the First Annual Duffer Awards. Me, too.

Speaking of Alafair, she, along with most of the contributing authors, attended the launch party for The Rich and the Dead at Otto Penzler's Mysterious Bookshop in Manhattan on April 26.  You will recall from my past Newsletters that this book is the Mystery Writers of America 2011 Anthology, of which I am the editor.  This is a good opportunity for me to continue my shameless hawking of this book.  I say shameless because some of the proceeds go directly to the MWA, and the money is used to keep this fine organization in business.  God knows, almost no one pays their dues, and mystery writers have been known to stop by the MWA office in Manhattan looking for subway fare or a cup of coffee.  So let's everyone help by going online now, or downloading on your eReader or iPad or doing something crazy and going to a bookstore.  The reviews for The Rich and the Dead have been phenomenal, and sales have been wonderful, so don't miss this once-a-year collection of great mystery stories by very talented writers.

The launch party, by the way, was a smashing success.  Nearly all the authors who contributed a story were there (and those who weren't were noted and their names were entered in The Black Book) and the enthusiastic crowds filled the store all night.  In fact, we actually sold out of books, and worse, the wine was gone by eight pm, so we switched to vodka.  A great time was had by all, and the authors thank everyone who came, and thanks to Otto Penzler for hosting.  Sorry I couldn't stay for the after party, but I had to go someplace nice.

Back to Paper Passion.  This is bugging me now.  First, it may surprise Mr. Lagerfeld, but most Americans don't associate the smell of linoleum with sex or passion unless maybe their first experience was on a linoleum floor.  And how many Americans under the age of, let's say, thirty even remember what linoleum smells like?  I do, but I associate the smell with the kitchen floor of my tenement when I was a kid.  Linoleum has a sickly, oily smell, and my stomach heaves even thinking about it.  Books smell better.  Don't do this, Karl.  And don't even consider an aftershave lotion.

Where was I?  Let's do a commercial announcement.  Follow me on this.  The trade paperback of The Lion will be published by Grand Central Publishing on June 7.  To recap, the hardcover of The Lion was published in June 2010 and now the less expensive edition is about to hit the shelves.  This is an excellent beach read for this summer and in light of all the current turmoil in the Mideast, it turns out to be a very timely book.

Also, three of my earlier novels By the Rivers of Babylon, Cathedral, and Mayday (co-authored with Thomas Block) will be available in the larger trade paperback edition for the first time, in June. Not available at the perfume counter where Paper Passion will be sold.

And now for some movie news: I got a phone call from my friend Mace Neufeld, who was the producer of The General's Daughter.  Mace will also be the producer of The Lion's Game if Columbia Motion Pictures/Sony ever makes the movie.  On that subject, Mace told me that he and Columbia went to George Clooney and offered him the part of John Corey.

Sorry, back to Paper Passion.  I love books, and I know you do, too.  But even if Paper Passion did smell like a book (and not linoleum) would you, ladies, want to smell like a book?  And would a man want you to smell like a book?  If you answered "Yes," then maybe you've got a problem.  I'm around books all day, and when I get home, I don't want my wife to smell like my office.  Right?  I like floral smells on women.  Or the smell of a dry martini.

Anyway, Mace and Columbia are proposing to Clooney that he consider making John Corey his franchise character, meaning a continuing character.  There are four other John Corey books Plum Island, Night Fall, Wild Fire, and The Lion and it would be very good if Columbia made them all into movies starring George Clooney.  It would be good for him, good for Columbia/Sony, good for Mace Neufeld, good for the motion picture business, and most importantly good for me.  I think George Clooney would make an excellent John Corey, and George is now reading The Lion's Game and I understand he's enjoying it.  You should read it, too, if you haven't already.  Or read it again, and write to George.  I'll keep everyone posted on any new developments.

But maybe, there could be a market for a perfume that smells like a book.  And I'll tell you why; as more and more readers turn to eBooks or Audiobooks, one of the lost reading experiences aside from the tactile feel of the paper, and the sound of rustling pages is the smell of the book.  Maybe eReaders in the future will reproduce the sound of a turning page, but don't hold your breath (pardon the pun) waiting for an eReader to smell like a book.  So, yes, if you miss paper books, you might want to douse yourself and your eReader or audio player with a perfume that smells like a book but what's with this linoleum?  Maybe a bad translation from the original German news release.

On to other announcements: On Sunday May 15, I was at BookHampton's Annual Mayhem event in Sag Harbor, Long Island.  I did a talk and signing, and the crowd was large and enthusiastic.  My thanks to BookHampton's proprietors, Charline Spektor and Jeremy Nussbaum for inviting me and for being such good hosts.  For more on this event, click here.

A reminder that I will be at Hunter College Writers' Conference (NYC) on Saturday, June 4 at 12:30 pm for a talk with my good friend Lewis Burke Frumkes.  Also, I've added another event to the day; a panel discussion with bestselling authors Stuart Woods, Mary Higgins Clark, and Carol Higgins Clark at 2:00 pm.  Stuart's a good guy and the Clarks are great friends.  If you're in the area, don't miss this well-regarded writers' conference.  Click here for more information.

And finally, my last known public appearance of 2011 the East Hampton (Long Island) Library's 7th Annual Authors Night fundraiser, on Saturday, August 13, 5:00-7:30 pm.

June is AudioBook Month, and the Audio Publishers Association has asked me to mention this, and to say, "Buy Audiobooks."  So, I said it, and I'll be more specific and say, "Buy Nelson DeMille Audiobooks."  I'll say even more about AudioBook Month in my June Newsletter I'm short on space here because of that stupid perfume.  I mean, I'd rather buy a book that smells like perfume, than perfume that smells like a book.  Except, I guess, if I came home at night from the library and I smelled like perfume, what am I going to tell my wife?  I was in the library?  Oh yeah?

So, in conclusion, it was a good month, and my work-in-progress, The Panther, is coming together.  My research trip to Yemen is still on hold, but if I don't get there before the book is finished, I'll schedule a few author appearances in Yemen when The Panther is published in Arabic.  I'm looking forward to that.

Happy Memorial Day, and remember our men and women in uniform, and all those who gave their lives for their country.

Nelson DeMille

Nelson DeMille
April 2011
A Note from Nelson DeMille
The Rich and the Dead Every time I think it's safe to go to Yemen to research my next John Corey novel, there's a new outbreak of civil unrest. The good news is that tourism is down to zero, so I won't have a problem getting a hotel room anytime I want to go.

I was at the Southwest Florida Reading Festival in Ft. Myers on Saturday, March 19 as announced, and I had a wonderful time. I gave two talks, the first with my Audiobook narrator, Scott Brick, and the second with bestselling author Ted Bell. Both talks attracted over 500 people, and the crowd was enthusiastic and very welcoming. I also did two booksignings at the Festival and signed hundreds of books, including some of my own. All in all, it was a great experience, and I thank everyone who attended, and everyone who put the event together for a good cause.

The night before my talks and signings, there was a reception and dinner for all the authors and guests from the community. I went to this reception directly from the airport with my good friend, Dan Barbiero, who had flown with me from New York to Fort Myers. At the reception, we were escorted to a table where five men and one lady were sitting. I began to introduce myself to the people at the table, then I realized I knew these men. They were, in fact, five guys I served with in Vietnam in 1968. I was absolutely floored. They'd heard I'd be at this event and they decided they needed to surprise their old lieutenant after 43 years. The amazing thing was that I recognized them. None of us had aged a day.

Here's who they are: Jerry Frease, who put this surprise reunion together, and who helps keep everyone in touch; Paul Sadowski, who was the last man of my platoon who I saw in November 1968 as I was leaving base camp for my long journey home; Jesse "Smitty" Smith, my radio operator whose most important job was to remind me to keep my head down; Ed "Doc" Copps, my medic, who saved a lot of lives; and Phil Hamm, who was badly wounded in both legs and still suffers from his injuries.

It was a wonderful reunionhappy and sadand we reminisced and caught up on life.

Dan Barbiero served with the Third Marines not far from where we'd been stationed in 1968, so he had a lot to talk about, too.

Smitty had brought his wife and she was a good trouper, listening to a lot of war stories.

The unit we'd been with in Vietnam was the famed First Cavalry Divisionmade more famous by the movie Apocalypse Nowand at the end of the evening, my guys presented me with a beautiful cavalry saber, inscribed from my platoon to me.

Thank you gentlemen, and welcome home.

And now for some NEW announcements: I will be participating in BookHampton's annual event called Mayhem. This is a weekend of booksignings and other activities at BookHampton's three bookstore locations on Long Island. I'll be doing a talk and signing at the Sag Harbor store at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 15. Click here for more information. This is a fun weekend, and if you're in the area, stop by.

I'll also be at Hunter College Writers' Conference (NYC) on Saturday, June 4 at 12:30 pm for a talk with the famed Lewis Burke Frumkes, followed by a booksigning. Click here for more information.

And finally, what will probably be my last booksigning of 2011the East Hampton (Long Island) Library's 7th Annual Authors Night event, on Saturday, August 13, 5:00-7:30 pm. This is held under a big tent and attracts rich and famous authors and much richer guests, plus the rest of us. It's a nice evening with wine and cheese, and the proceeds go to the East Hampton Public Library. For more info, click here.

As I've mentioned in my last two Newsletters, I was honored to be chosen as the editor of the 2011 Mystery Writers of America Anthology, titled The Rich and the Dead. You can pre-order this book from your favorite online retailer right nowI'll waitand it will be delivered to your door on or about publication day, which is May 2. Or you can pre-order from your favorite bookstore, and beat the crowds on May 2 who will be fighting for the last remaining copies on the shelves.

And don't forget, if you're in New York City on Tuesday, April 26, you are invited to the launch party of The Rich and the Dead, 6:00-8:00 pm at The Mysterious Bookshop, located at 58 Warren Street. There will be pre-publication copies of The Rich and the Dead available for purchase, and many of the short story contributors will be theremyself includedto sign your copy at no extra charge. The proprietor of The Mysterious Bookshop is my good friend, the legendary Otto Penzler, who has ordered a case of squirt cheese and a box of crackers whose sell-by date is also April 26. The crackers expire at midnight, so get there early. You've heard of jug wine and box wine, but have you heard of Hefty Bag wine? Otto has a bag of red and a bag of white which will flow all night. Bring your own straws, ladles, or plastic cups. Hey, the New York literary scene also got hit hard by the recession. The eighties are over.

In conclusion, one more thanks to my brave and trusted men who fought a hard and unpopular war, but who kept the faith and loved their country. And to the men and women who are serving now around the world to keep us safe at homethank you, and safe home to you.

Happy Easter and Happy Passover!

March 2011
A Note from Nelson DeMille
Cathedral Happy St. Patrick's Day and happy spring.

My good friend Mary Higgins Clark has been chosen to be the Grand Marshall of this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City. This is quite an honor, and I look forward to seeing Mary leading the parade, and also look forward to sharing a few cocktails with her afterwards.

Years ago, I used to watch the parade from the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral as an invited guest of the church. If you read my book, Cathedral, which is about the Irish Republican Army taking over St. Patrick's Cathedral and seizing hostages during the parade, you'll understand why I'm no longer an invited guest.

Some repeat announcements: I will be making an appearance at The Southwest Florida Reading Festival in Fort Myers on Saturday, March 19. I'll be doing a presentation with bestselling author Ted Bell at 12:30 pm, followed by a booksigning, then a presentation with Scott Brick at 2:15 pm, followed by another booksigning. Scott, as you may know, is the narrator of many of my Audiobooks. For more information on this event, click here. Hope you can be there.

The Rich and the DeadAlso, as reported, I was invited to be the editor of the 2011 Mystery Writers of America Annual Anthology, titled The Rich and the Dead, to be published on May 2 by Grand Central Publishing. I've collected short stories from twenty of the most outstanding mystery writers in the country, myself included, and in my unbiased opinion, this is a superb collection of new and original mysteries. Pre-order it now online or through your bookstore. The proceeds support the Mystery Writers of America, a great organization that is dedicated to bringing you the finest mystery stories by the best writers in America, myself again included. Check out their website.

To kick off the publication of the The Rich and the Dead, there will be a book signing at the Mysterious Bookshop at 58 Warren Street, NYC, on Tuesday, April 26, 6-8 pm. I'll be there as will many of the other authors who have contributed short stories to the anthology. The deal is, buy a book and all the authors present will sign their stories and/or the title page of the book. This will become an immediate collector's edition.

The owner of the Mysterious Bookshop is Mr. Otto Penzler, an old and dear friend of mine who has promised some wine and cheese for the occasion. The Mysterious Bookshop is a revered New York institution and one of the last mystery bookstores in the city. Please join us on April 26 for a nice evening. Admission is free, but you need to buy a book to get out.

On June 1st, three of my earlier novelsMayday, Cathedral, and By the Rivers of Babylonwill be published in the trade paperback edition for the first time, with new Forewords by the author. That's me.

Also in June, my most recent novel, The Lion, which was published in hardcover in June 2010, will be published in trade paperback on June 7th.

And don't forget, all of my novels are available as Audiobooks, eBooks, and in various print editions. As I've said, I'm not trying to get you to read my books; I'm trying to get you to buy them.

And now on to new news: I have a tentative title for my new John Corey novelThe Panther. You may recall that my last John Corey novel was titled The Lion. As Corey might say, it seems to be his fate to get attacked by big cats. I'm sure he wishes his next adversary is named Kitty. But John can handle it.

The Panther is coming along well and should be published in the spring of 2012.

Most of The Panther is set in Yemen, and as I mentioned, I was planning to go to Yemen in February for research, but it looks a little unsettled there at the moment, and I might get more research than I bargained for. So, I've put the trip on hold until the Yemenis get on with their revolution, or call it off. I'm afraid if I went now, my presence might be a destabilizing influence. Or I might get killed.

No news on the movie front since my February Newsletter, but my agent assures me that the inertia that has existed since The General's Daughter was made into a movie in 1999 will continue in full force.

As reported last month, Bradley Cooper was reading the screenplay for The Charm School to see if he wanted to play the part of the main character, Sam Hollis. Brad must be a slow reader because I haven't heard anything since then. Come on, Brad. If you read only three pages a day for thirty days, you'll finish the whole script, including the title page. Try coffee.

In conclusion, as you may have noticed, I've closed down my website e-mailbox. This is temporary and it will reopen as soon as I finish my novel.

Nelson DeMille
February 2011
A Note from Nelson DeMille

The Gold Coast

Whoever said that April was the cruelest month must have spent January and February in Barbados. Actually, it was T.S. Eliot, and he wrote that in 1922, before global warmingnow known as Climate Changeso maybe April was cruel ninety years ago, but now it's looking very good from here.

I mean, I don't mind the cold and the snow, but the sleet, hail, and rain is a bit much, and then it gets warmer and everything turns to slush, then freezes again. Also, the wind has been unusually strong. How strong? Well, a flasher on 42nd Street opened his trench coat and got lifted into a holding pattern over the Chrysler Building.

On to other subjects. A few weeks ago I found myself at a dinner party in Michael's Restaurant on West 55th Street, and sitting across from me was Tony Lo Bianco, who is a very fine actor and a good guy. Mr. Lo Bianco told me that he had just seen Marty Bregman who owns the movie rights to The Gold Coast, and Marty told Tony that, "Al has agreed to star in The Gold Coast." Great news. Who's Al? Must be Pacino. Marty had originally bought the movie rights years ago with the idea that Pacino would play the part of Mafia don Frank Bellarosa. Marty had made several movies with Al, so this was exciting when it was first announced twenty years ago. And it's still excitingthough I have no confirmation of this; I'm just passing along what I heard from Tony, who also said that Marty's son, Michael (no relation to the restaurant), has written the screenplay (which I knew) and that Al likes Michael's screenplay. I don't know if Al read my book, but if he has, I hope he enjoyed it. I, hope, too, that Tony gets a great part in the movie.

Also on the movie front, my agent has told me that Bradley Cooper is reading the screenplay for The Charm School. I guess if Brad likes the screenplay, he'll agree to play the part of the main character, Sam Hollis. I must confess here that I didn't know who Bradley Cooper was, but when I mentioned this to my wife, she fainted. So, I guess he's a hottie. Anyway, that's the movie news as it has developed since my January Newsletter. More next month if I hear anything new.

And now for some repeat announcements: As I said in January, I will make an appearance at The Southwest Florida Reading Festival in Fort Myers on Saturday, March 19.

Also, as reported, I was invited to be the editor of the 2011 Mystery Writers of America Annual Anthology, titled The Rich and the Dead, to be published on May 2 by Grand Central Publishing. I've collected short stories from twenty of the most outstanding mystery writers in the country, myself included, and in my unbiased opinion, this is a superb collection of new and original stories. Pre-order it now online or through your bookstore. The proceeds support the Mystery Writers of America, a great organization that is dedicated to bringing you the finest mystery stories by the best writers in America, myself again included. I was honored to be president of the MWA in 2007 and I served a full year without incident or impeachment, so I like them. Check out their website.

A new announcement: To kick off the publication of the 2011 Mystery Writers of America Annual Anthology, there will be a book signing at the Mysterious Bookshop at 58 Warren Street, NYC, on Tuesday, April 26, 6-8 pm. This is a week before publication but there will be books available to buy or steal. Also, I'll be there as will many of the other authors who have contributed short stories to the anthology.

As I mentioned last month, my last novel, The Lion, which was published in hardcover in June 2010, will be published in trade paperback on June 7 of this year.

Also in June, three of my earlier novelsMayday, Cathedral, and By the Rivers of Babylonwill be published in the trade paperback edition for the first time, with a Foreword by the author. That's me.

And don't forget, all of my novels are available as Audiobooks, eBooks, and in various print editions. As I've said, I'm not trying to get you to read my books; I'm trying to get you to buy them.

I get hundreds of emails a month and I assure you I read every one of them, but as I've said, I can't respond to everyone; if I did, I wouldn't be writing any novels. One frequently asked question, however, can be answered here. Many people have asked me if I'm going to bring back the character of Paul Brenner who appeared in The General's Daughter and Up Country. Even John Travolta, who played Paul Brenner in General's Daughter, has asked me about thateven though John turned down the Brenner role in Up Country. Well, with so much reader interest in Paul Brenner, I've decided to give him a major part in my new John Corey novel. So, for the first time, two of my main characters meet in a novel. John Corey and Paul Brenner. Two loveable ego maniacs. This should be interesting.

In conclusion, don't forget that February 14 is Valentine's Day. Do something different this year. Buy a book for your Valentine and dip it in hot chocolate. Don't do this with an eBook or Audiobook.

January 2011
A Note from Nelson DeMille

Happy New Year!

In my December archived Newsletter I inaccurately reported that the end of the world was a year away. No, it's two years awayDecember 21, 2012, the Winter Solstice. Coming up fast. Mark your calendar. You don't want to miss this.

Meanwhile, I'm happy to announce that I will make an appearance at The Southwest Florida Reading Festival in Fort Myers on Saturday, March 19.

The Rich and the Dead

Also, I was invited to be the editor of the 2011 Mystery Writers of America Annual Anthology, titled The Rich and the Dead, to be published on May 2 by Grand Central Publishing. I've collected short stories from twenty of the most outstanding mystery writers in the country, myself included, and in my unbiased opinion, this is a superb collection of new and original stories. Pre-order it now online or through your bookstore. I was honored to be president of the MWA in 2007 and I served a full year without incident or impeachment, so I like them. Check out their website.

The Lion

My last novel, The Lion, continues to sell well in hardcover, thanks to youunless you haven't bought a copy yet, in which case, thanks for nothing. But you have a chance to purchase the trade paperback edition which will be published on June 7. All proceeds go to the Internal Revenue Service.

Also in June, three of my earlier novelsMayday, Cathedral, and By the Rivers of Babylonwill be published in the trade paperback edition for the first time, with a Foreword by the author, me. The trade paperback is a nice format; larger than the mass market paperbacks and therefore easier to read, unless you don't read English, in which case it doesn't matter how big the type is.

And don't forget, all of my novels are available as Audiobooks, eBooks, and in various print editions. Also don't forget that Federal law makes it a crime to loan or borrow a book. In this country, you have the right to buy your own book, so exercise that right.

I'm currently working on my newest John Corey novel, which is still untitled. This is the book I mentioned where John and Kate are assigned to Yemen to investigate the USS Cole bombing. I'm scheduled to go to Yemen for research at the end of this month. A popular pastime in Yemen is kidnapping Westerners and holding them for ransom. So if you don't hear from me for awhile, you'll know why. The Nelson DeMille Ransom Fund will contact you. Be generous. I need to be back for my Florida booksigning.

In conclusion, I wish everyone a New Year of health, happiness, peace, and prosperity.

December 2010
A Note from Nelson DeMille

The Gate House

First, belated Happy Hanukkah to all my Jewish friends and fans. My two older children read Hebrew and I've given them the Hebrew translations of my novels, which as you may know, read back to front and right to left. No, you don't read the ending firstit'shard to explain. Also, my kids tell me that four letter words sound funnier in Hebrew.

On another subject, the paperback edition of The Gate House continues to sell well through this holiday season, and I'll remind everyone that all my paperbacks make great stocking stuffers if you take your foot out first.

On a more serious note, the world could possibly end on December 21, 2012, which is only a year away now. But as I mentioned in my Archived November Newsletter, there may have been a miscalculation of that date, depending on how you read the Mayan calendar. For sure it's December 21, the Winter Solstice (except in Australia) but the "End of Days" may be in the year 2062, or 2112. In other words, it could be 50 or 100 years from 2012. So, how did these bright archaeologists screw this up? I was in Chichen Itza a few years ago and I saw the Mayan calendar carved on a temple wall, and I have a theory; the calendar, which is round, should be read back to front, and right to left, like in Hebrew. If you do it that way, it's A) funnier, B) more accurate, and C) it contains a secret recipe for chopped chicken livers. Chichen Itza. Get it? The Mayans were one of the lost tribes of Israel! Check it out on Nat Geo. Case closed.

Nothing new on the Beanie Book Blaster or using nano-bots to download your brain onto disks (Archived October Newsletter), but when I get more info, I'll pass it on hereor send you a brainwave. Meanwhile, buy a book. Any book.

I'm reading my four-year-old son Clement Moore's Night Before Christmas, and the kid has a lot of problems with the fat guy getting down the chimney. Problems, too, with the flying reindeer, and the elves making the toys at the North Pole, then labeling them all "Made in China." Right. Well, a little skepticism is good, but we all have to believe. That's what Christmas is aboutbelief, wonder, magic and hope. I explained all this to him, and he's okay with Santa and the chimney, and even the flying reindeer, and all the rest of it, but he's seen China and the North Pole on his globe, and he's not buying that it's the same place. Maybe I should explain outsourcing to him.

On the subject of Christmas, I and a lot of other authors were asked to write a holiday blog for Bookreporter.com about receiving or giving a book for Christmas. This was a nice topic and these blogs will be running through New Year's Daya different author each daymy blog will run on Christmas Day. Please check them all out at Bookreporter.com

I will now sign off for the year with best wishes to you and yours for a very Merry and blessed Christmas, and a New Year of hope, happiness, and health. And don't forget our men and women in uniform serving around the world.

November 2010
A Note from Nelson DeMille

The Gate House

As I mentioned in my October Newsletter, the paperback edition of The Gate House was to be published on November 1 and it was, and it's doing very well, thanks to you. And thanks to me, too, for writing such a great book.

Did you know that November 1 was National Author's Day? Neither did I until I got an email from my sister-in-law that day wishing me a happy Author's Day. That was news to me, and I wondered why Author's Day should coincide with All Saints Day. Maybe Congress was making a joke when they passed the resolution. I mean, I don't mind sharing the day with all the saints, but what do the saints think about sharing their day with authors?

November 11 was Veteran's Day and as I do every year, I got together with a group of Vietnam veterans to have dinner and reminisce and to thank God or Fate for our safe return. We toasted all the men and women who've served, and those who have given their lives for their country.

While we were waiting for our table, I saw on the TV screen above the bar a picture of Dino De Laurentiis, the movie producer and an old friend of mine, and I realized the news story was about his death. He was 91 and lived a full and interesting life and had a wonderful wife, Martha, and two great daughters, Dina and Carolyna. Dino, rest in peace, my friend.

On to happier news. As it turns out, the world is not going to end on December 21, 2012. New research has found that there was an error in the conversion of the Mayan to the modern calendar, and the "End of Days" predicted in the Mayan calendar may be 50 or 100 years later. This is a true news story and you may have seen it. I mean, this is like your doctor telling you, "Sorry, I mixed up the x-rays and blood tests. You're not going to die." Meanwhile, you've divorced your spouse, quit your job, and told your family what you really thought of them. Ooops.

Anyway, I'll keep on this breaking story. Maybe the researchers are wrong and the world will end on December 21, 2012. But don't do anything crazy until we know for sure.

Also in my last Newsletter, I described the Beanie Book Blaster that will shoot my books directly into your brain with a pulsating laser beam. Archived October Newsletter. The problem was that there was no way to recover the memory of the books. I mean, they're all in there, floating around the icky, gray, spongy brain tissue, but how do you recall, for instance, The General's Daughter? Or the sex scenes in The Gate House?

Well, there's been a breakthrough. (True news item. Check it out) A top scientist, Raymond Kurzweil, is working on a way to download the entire contents of your brain onto disk drives. That's right. Through the use of "nano-bots," brain-downloading will soon be possible. Some people, of course, may need fewer disks, like my cousin in California, or book critics, but this technology will allow you to hear the entire content of your brain on your iPod. Maybe even read it on your iPad, Kindle, or Nook. More on this as it develops. Meanwhile, go buy a paperback copy of The Gate House.

The Lion
As I mentioned in my last Newsletter, if you live in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, or any other English speaking country, The Lion was published there on November 4. And I just found out that The Lion has hit the bestseller lists in Australia and New Zealand, and I thank my fans there for that. Also, sorry I made fun of the Aussies in my September and October Newsletters. I take it all back. Love you.

In closing, I want to wish everyone (in the U.S.) a Happy Thanksgiving, and also a belated Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends and family. Sorry I missed mentioning your Thanksgiving on October 11, but it was also Columbus Day here, and I can't think of two holidays at the same time. And why, by the way, do you Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on a Monday in October? I guess the weather in November sucks up there. Right? So, what do you eat on Thanksgiving? Moose? Just kidding. Hey, I'm half Canadian so I can make a few jokes. Go buy a copy of The Lion or The Gate House to show me you're not mad. Just like the Aussies did. Love you all.

Anyway, we all have a lot to be thankful for, except I don't like turkey, and cranberry sauce looks like a quivering red brain, but everything goes good with a few Bourbon Manhattans, so have a happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving.

Nelson DeMille
October 2010
A Note from Nelson DeMille

The Lion
As promised, here is my October Newsletter in October. In my last Newsletter, I went on a bit about summer turning to fall in the Northern Hemisphere on September 21, and winter turning to spring in the Southern Hemisphere on the same day. Well, I got a bunch of emails from Aussies telling me that winter ends there on August 31. They all admitted that this was an arbitrary date, not linked as it should be to the position of the sun. Okay. I'm glad the Aussies didn't build Stonehenge.

I did a book publicity trip to Australia and New Zealand about fifteen years ago and I absolutely loved the country and the people, and I look forward to my next trip. Meanwhile, The Lion will be published there on November 4. It will make a good summer beach reading Christmas gift.

The Lion will also be published by Little, Brown, U.K. in the United Kingdom and Ireland on November 4, and in other British Commonwealth countries around the world where English is spoken. So, if you happen to be in, say, Uganda, in November, buy a copy of The Lion. Cheaper than a real lion. My overseas royalties go into a numbered Swiss bank account that the I.R.S. doesn't know about. Mum's the word.

The Gate House
As I announced in my last Newsletter, the mass market (cheap) edition of The Gate House will be published by Grand Central Publishing on November 1, here in the U.S. and Canada. Again, paperbacks make great stocking stuffers and good turkey stuffers.

Back to Australia. This is really bothering me. This Newsletter goes out all over the world and I try to make it international, but I can see this could be a problem. We all know that the world is going to end on December 21, 2012, which is the Winter Solstice. But when is the world going to end in Australia? December 1? January 1? You see what I'm getting at. Let me hear from you guys down under about this.

Also, on the international front, The Gate House was published in France in June, titled Le Domaine. I got lots of great reader emails from La Belle France, and almost everyone commented on the intriguingly ambiguous ending, and the fact that the lack of resolution was strangely satisfying in an existential way. Great. Whatever. Well, as it turns out, my French publisher inadvertently left off the last two chapters of the book. Mon Dieu! Holy Souffl! But my French publisher tells me that only a fraction of the print run has missing chapters. I think the fraction is 15/16ths. But if anyone out there in the French speaking world, including Quebec, has a complete 71 chapter bookas opposed to a 69 chapter booklet me know. I'll send you a baguette or something.

On to happier news. I mentioned in my September Newsletter that in the near future, you will be able to download my books into a 3-D holographic Talkie Bookie (see the archived September Newsletter for a complete description of this device). Well, in the fast and ever-changing world of digital and electronic technology, the future is past before it arrives, and this device is obsolete before it was available. The good news is that my books can now be converted into a pulsating laser beam and blasted into your brain in less than three seconds. This device, called Beanie Book Blaster will only be available for use in Starbucks. While you're waiting half an hour for the barista to get your mocha latte made, the Beanie Book Blaster can shoot the entire canon of Western Literature into your brain. All you need to do is type in the titles or use the voice recognition program if you haven't been eating peanut butter brownies or something.

How, you ask, do you recover the memory of these books? Wellthey're working on that. More next month.

And finally, a word about my next book. As I said in my last Newsletter, this will be a new John Corey/Kate Mayfield book. I've decided to get John and Kate out of New York and out of 26 Federal Plaza, and put them in Yemen. Where is Yemen? It's on the map. First find Saudi Arabia, which is big. Then go south to a spot where if Saudi Arabia needed an enema, this would be where you'd put it. See it?

Okay, why Yemen? Because it's a really dangerous placeAl Qaeda guys, CIA, drone missile strikes, USS Cole bombing and other bad stuff. You might recall that in Night Fall, John Corey was sent on assignment to Yemen and did not enjoy it. Now, he and Kate are being assigned together for a dangerous missionthink Indiana Jones meets James Bond. I've already finished the first two chapters and sent them to my French publisher to replace the missing chapters in Le Domaine.

Okay, that's itexcept for a gentle reminder to buy a paperback copy of The Gate House when it comes out on November 1that's All Saints Day, the day after Halloween, except maybe in Australia. Does anyone know?

And don't forget that November 4 is publication day for The Lion in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and some other places where they spell labor as labour and favor as favour, and so fourth. Forth?

Anyway, have a great Halloween and don't forget that Tuesday, November 2 is Election Day in the U.S., and the Day of the Dead in Mexico. Or is it the other way around? Hard to tell these days. And remember, if you vote, you encourage them.

  September 2010
A Note from Nelson DeMille
The Lion's Game
The summer will be officially over here in the Northern Hemisphere on September 21, and if you live in the Southern Hemisphere, winter will be over on the same day. The point I'm making iswell, I don't know. Maybe climate change. Maybe the climate changes depending on the season, and where you live. Or is that the weather I'm thinking about? Anyway, hope you had a great summer--or winter--and that the fall--or spring--is really nice, wherever you are. And if you live right on the equator, have a good day.

On another subject, let me recommend a good book for you during this transitional period. If you haven't read The Lion, published in June here in the U.S. and in Canada, this is a good time to do that. And don't forget the prequel, The Lion's Game, which has been in print since 2000. Both books sold briskly this summer/winter, and I thank you again for your support and for your letters.

One reader wrote to me, "I buy all of your books as soon as they come out, but I haven't read any of them. Is that okay?"

Yes, of course. You don't have to read them you just have to buy them. I don't care what you do with them after you leave the cash register. Same if you download them on an eReader. To clarify: Step One, buy book; Step Two, read book, don't read book. That's your after-sale choice.

The Gate House
On a related subject, I'd like to announce here that the mass-market paperback edition of The Gate House will be published by Grand Central Publishing on November 1. If you bought the hardcover when it was published in October 2008, thank you. And if you still haven't gotten around to reading it, don't worry about it. I'm not. And if you bought the large trade paperback edition that was published in November 2009, you've been included in my last royalty statement under "copies sold." There is no category called "copies read."

If you somehow missed buying the hardcover or trade paperback, you can buy the less expensive mass-market paperback as of November 1. Paperbacks make great stocking stuffers and good turkey stuffers. You need two for a twenty-pound bird. Use the pre-seasoned edition.

More good news: soon, you will be able to download my books into a 3-D Holographic Talkie Bookie. This device will enable you to see and hear the author (me) reading my book aloud while I go about a normal day's activities, i.e. you can watch me exercise on my treadmill while reading to you, then eating breakfast, taking a walk downtown, screaming at a dense clerk in a department store, ripping up a chapter of my next novel, ordering a scotch and soda in my local pub, and so forth.

This is cutting-edge electronic technology, and this device is light years ahead of all other eBook readers. It combines audio and visual, in 3-D color and surround sound, making it feel as though I'm reading my book to you as we keep each other company during the day. Awesome. The 3-D HTB will be available, hopefully, before the holidays, but no later than December 21, 2012 when the world ends.

Some other breaking news: I've announced in previous Newsletters that my next novel will be an airline disaster story, titled Captain. Well, there's been a change. With the huge success of The Lion, my publisher and my fans have asked me to do another John Corey book. My fans and my publisher know best, so of course I said yes. More on the new John Corey/Kate Mayfield book in future Newsletters when I figure out a plot.

I recently did a blog for Mulholland Books and you can read it by clicking here. It's really terrific. And it's free.

That's it for now. Look for my October Newsletter in October.

August 2010

A Note from Nelson DeMille

The Lion's Game
The Lion continues to sell well, and I thank all of you who've bought it and kept it on the bestseller lists.

I also want to thank everyone who e-mailed me through my website. A few people asked me to clarify the ending of The Lion. One lady wrote that she and her husband were on the verge of divorce arguing about the ending. I helped her out by emailing her the name of a good divorce lawyer.

A number of e-mailers have asked me to read their manuscripts, and/or tell them how to get their book published. I wish I knew. I don't even know how I got published the first time. You might try changing your main character into a vampire. Or make up some endorsements from recently dead authors. Like, "Best damn vampire romance I've ever read Stieg Larsson." Or, "This coming-of-age vampire novel really sucks J. D. Salinger." You get the idea. Good luck.

A lot of people have e-mailed me that they have a great story to tell like the inside scoop on the upholstery business but they can't write, and they'd like me to write their story for them. As tempting as this is, my publishing contract clearly states in Paragraph 3, "The author (DeMille) has such a huge ego and is so difficult to work with that a collaboration with another author is all but impossible." Sorry.

On another subject, I've read a few great books this spring and summer and I'd like to recommend them: First, In the Name of Honor by bestselling author Richard North Patterson. In one of Stephen King's books he has a character say, "Patterson and DeMille are probably the best of the current popular novelists." I agree with Stephen on this and I hope you will, too.

I love it when I "discover" a new writer, and one of the best first novels I've read in years is Think of a Number by John Verdon. This is truly a great read and you won't be disappointed.

Also, I'm reading a great anthology of spy stories, Agents of Treachery, edited by Otto Penzler, who is a good friend who paid me to say this.

The Charm School
Finally, The Charm School, by me. In this book you will see many uncanny similarities to the current Russian spy case, i.e. sleeper agents trained in Russia to talk and act like Americans, then sent here to spy. I'm not the only one to notice this similarity; many of you have emailed me about this, plus many print articles about this case have mentioned The Charm School, as have many commentators on radio and TV. So, life imitates art imitates life. Did I Get my book idea from the Russians? Or did they get their spying idea from my book? You be the judge.

The reviewers have been kind to The Lion, with one reviewer comparing it (in length) to War and Peace, and another to Gone with the Wind for the same reason. Several astute reviewers compared The Lion to The Lion's Game which makes sense because The Lion is the sequel to The Lion's Game. Right?

I did get some snarky reviews from online readers/reviewers, complete with errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and plot points. Many of these reviewers stated, "I won't buy any more DeMille books." Thank you.

The good thing about a publicity tour is that I get to meet readers and bookstore people who are very enthusiastic about my books. I did get some heckling at one bookstore, however. As I was talking, a voice said, "What's he talking about? Why is he talking so much?" The heckler was my three-year old son, who was with my wife, and who clearly wanted to be somewhere else. My son, I mean not my wife. I responded to him, as I always do, "Pipe down, little man." And he replied, as he always does, "No, you pipe down." That got a few laughs and I banished him to the children's book section.

This is my last Newsletter for the summer, and after Labor Day I go back to a full writing schedule. I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and that you're reading great books.

John Corey has asked me to pass on his regards and his thanks for your support, and his advice for the summer. "Get yourself a cold beer, a hot book, and a pound of sliced baloney for edible bookmarks. Life is good."

P.S. Please consider sharing this Newsletter with a friend.

July 2010

A Note from Nelson DeMille

First, the good news: The Lion debuted at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list. Bad news: it was actually tied for #1 with Stieg Larssons, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest.

I dont mind sharing the top spot with another author, but Stieg Larsson didnt even bother to promote his book. Ive been breaking my back doing radio, TV, print interviews, and bookstore signings since The Lion was published on June 8. And Larsson has done absolutely nothing to help his publisher publicize his book. To be fair, though, I should mention that Stieg Larsson is dead. Proving once again that some authors will do anything to get out of a book tour.

In any case, I want to thank everyone who bought or downloaded The Lion and put it at the top of the list.

The Lion continues to sell well, and if you got it or gave it for Fathers Day, it was the perfect gift, and if you bought it for yourself, go ahead and autograph it with my name and write something nice from me to you.

Also, dont forget that the prequel to The Lion, The Lions Game has been reissued, and if you enjoyed The Lion, you will also enjoy The Lions Game. If you didnt enjoy The Lion, then get in your Volvo or Saab and go buy The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest. See if I care.

Since the publication of The Lion, Ive gotten thousands of emails through my website and I want to thank each and every one of you whove taken the time to write. Ninety-five percent of the letters were very positive, four percent were negative, and one percent were relatives asking for money.

On the positive side, one nice lady wrote, ANOTHER REASON SOME PEOPLE MAY WANT TO BUY ''THE LION''. When you walk a dog or push a baby in a stroller people stop and talk to you. Well, if you read The Lion in a public place, the same thing happens - at the beach, on the train, waiting outside stores at the mall while my daughters shopped (of course, they called me in when it was time to pay) - wherever I was, I could not believe the number of people who had to speak with me. So if you want to read The Lion in peace, my advice is - stay home. On the other hand, if you want to meet lots of new people, just carry The Lion with you, even after you finish reading it. Anyway, thanks for another great read, although I do find it somewhat scary that I can read a story like this and laugh through the whole book. My only complaint is that, as always, it was over too soon. Regards, Susan F.

So, if you want to meet new people...

Ive gotten a lot of emails from our servicemen and women overseas, and I thank them, not only for their letters, but for their service to our country. Safe home.

I wish I could answer all your letters, but my publicity and writing schedule takes most of my time, though as I said, I do read every letter I get and answer when I can.

Meanwhile, I wish everyone a happy and healthy summer, and please carry around a copy of The Lion. You never know who youll meet. Right, Susan?

P.S. Please consider sharing this Newsletter with a friend.

June 2010

A Note from Nelson DeMille

My last Newsletter was in April, so if you don't remember a May Newsletter you are not losing your marbles. Ordid I post one in May? Let me know.

More importantly, today, Tuesday, June 8 is publication day for The Lion! Hopefully, you've pre-ordered your copy online or at your bookstore and you won't have to wait in long lines or be disappointed by empty shelves. Most bookstores are limiting sales to two per customer, so bring the whole family if you want more than two copies of The Lion. Many stores will stay open late tonight to handle the crowds, but I suggest you get there early. The Lion is also available on CD in abridged and unabridged formats, and includes an interview with me, done by Scott Brick who is the narrator of the AudioBooks. Scott does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life, so if you still like to be read to, then curl up with your Teddy and ba-ba and let Scott read to you. The interview at the end of the book is interesting and revealing, and if you play it backwards you will be shocked by what you hear. Also, The Lion is available in most e-book formats, including a cocktail table edition.

***
At the end of May, I went to BookExpo, the annual publishing industry gathering which was held this year in New York City at the Javits Center. When I walked into the convention hall, there were thousands of people jammed into the huge lobby, dozens of photographers, reporters, and TV news crews, all facing me. I was totally overwhelmed by this turnout, and I waved and flashed the V sign to the assembled throng, then I shouted, "Lion!," and repeated it "Lion, Lion, Lion!" hoping that the crowd would take up the chant.

Then my publicist whispered in my ear, "They're waiting for Sarah Ferguson."
"Who?"
"The Duchess of York."
"Huh?"
"She's here to sign her books. She writes children's books."
"Really?"
My wife advised, "Let's get a cup of coffee."
"Where's the bar?" I asked.

The rest of the day went better and I signed advance reading copies of The Lion, did a stage interview with Scott Brick, and went to the booth of my publisher, who does not publish the Duchess of York, and where I am appreciated.

It was a good BookExpo and there was a lot of buzz about The Lion, with many bookstore owners saying, "Nice cover." One book wholesaler commented, "Thank God it's shorter than your last three."

Afterwards, my wife and I went to a party that was generously sponsored by the New York Times and I started a rumor that Sarah Ferguson and Nelson DeMille were arriving together. This got everyone moving to the front door and away from the crowded bar where I was able to get a scotch and soda.

But I digress. The Lion is on sale today and I've already bought my copy. There are 999,999 left. Father's Day is June 20. Need I say more?

Hope you enjoy The Lion and hope you are enjoying the summer.

  April 2010
A Note from Nelson DeMille
This is my first Newsletter since December and I hope everyone had a good winter despite the record-breaking global warming freeze in most of the country.

I've just read and corrected the galley proofs of my new book, The Lion, and it's off to the printer. The Lion will be published June 8, as scheduled, in a limited edition of one million copies which will be offered to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to avoid long lines and disappointment, I suggest you pre-order your copy or copies online, or call your bookstore and ask them to reserve a copy for you. When these million copies are gone, there will be no more copies available to the public unless the publisher goes back to press for another half million or so. But don't take a chance on being left out Order now while supplies last! The Lion will make a great Father's Day gift, or a belated Mother's Day gift. And don't forget birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, christenings, bar mitzvahs, or relatives in prison. And if you're like me, you like to have a heavy book in your hand when you answer the door to a solicitor or census taker. Two whacks upside the head usually gets rid of them.

I'm still working on Captain which will be published sometime in 2011. I'm about halfway through the book and I've figured out what it's about. At first it was supposed to be about a long boring flight from Rome to New York. But then I decided to introduce the element of computer failure over the Atlantic. Well, as you can imagine, the flight gets interesting at that point. I'm actually flying from Rome to New York in May, so if the computer goes down I can see firsthand if I'm getting it right.

I just autographed my income tax check and like millions of other Americans I probably won't get a thank you note from the IRS. It's like the whole IRS is made up of my nieces and nephews.

Just to remind everyone, the prequel to The Lion, titled The Lion's Game, will be reissued in mass market paperback on May 3, and in the larger trade paperback edition on May 19. It's not necessary to read or reread The Lion's Game before you read The Lion, but it's not a bad idea either. I mean, do you really remember The Lion's Game? I don't, and I wrote it. This reissued edition of The Lion's Game includes a sneak preview chapter from The Lion and also a new Author's Introduction.

Not much new on the movie front except that the manuscript of The Lion is out with about sixty producers and studios and we're waiting for the offers to start rolling in. I did get an offer from the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences for one million dollars if I'd stop sending manuscripts to Hollywood. My agent is negotiating.

Well, that's about it. I hope you're all enjoying the spring and that you've managed to find something to read before The Lion comes out in June, just in time for beach reading.

  December 2009
A Note from Nelson DeMille
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I enjoy the holiday, but I wish the Pilgrims had shot a cow instead of a turkey. I mean, turkey is good for you, but steak is something to be thankful for.

One of the things I am thankful for are my great readers who consistently put my books on the bestseller list. The Gate House trade paperback edition was released on November 3, and it immediately made it to the New York Times bestseller list as well as other lists around the country. So for that I thank all of you who bought the book. I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope you also enjoyed Chapter One of The Lion, which is included in the back of The Gate House. The Lion, which is the sequel to The Lion's Game will be published on June 8, 2010, in time for the Summer Solstice on June 21. Depending on your longitude and latitude, you can read this book by sunlight until about 8 pm longer, if you sit on your roof thereby helping the environment and reducing global warming by three percent.

My November Newsletter generated almost a thousand emails from my readers. I promise you, I do read every email, but it's obviously not possible to answer each one. However, I do thank you all for writing, and for your good wishes, and your suggestions, comments, and even your criticisms which are usually helpful. Even the really dumb criticisms are interesting.

In my last Newsletter, I mentioned my next book, titled Captain, and I said I didn't know what it was about. This generated about a hundred emails with suggestions and I picked one. Captain will be an airline disaster novel with a twist. The twist is this: the airplane never leaves the ground. It sits on the runway for six hours and no one makes an announcement to the passengers. The lavs back up, the air conditioning is not working, the galley is closed, and finally the pilots and crew sneak off the plane under cover of darkness. Then, an amateur pilot enters the cockpit. He can't fly the aircraft, but he taxis to the highway and heads for the nearest Hooters. Happy ending.

Speaking of endings, as we all know by now, the world will end on December 21, 2012. That's the bad news. The good news is that I will have another book out in time for Christmas 2012. It's called "Two or Three Books to Read Before You Get Vaporized. "Originally, it was a hundred books, but...well, two or three is probably all you can read before December 21. More on this as the time approaches.

On the movie front, the big question going around is: Will Hollywood turn another DeMille book into a major motion picture before the world ends? A few years ago, I would have answered Yes! But now, as The End approaches, I'm more pessimistic about seeing one of my books on the silver screen. My agent, too, is concerned about not seeing any royalties after Doomsday. On the brighter side, we won't have to audit the royalty statements. Or take any more meetings in L.A.

I'd like to remind everyone that a book makes a great holiday gift. The gift of a book shows thought, and it sends a message to the recipient that you think he or she is literate. Also, you're probably not paying full cover price, but it looks like you spent about thirty bucks. And finally, if you shop early, you can read the book first, then wrap it. Just don't sneeze on it.

Before I sign off, I'd like to ask a favor. Please forward this Newsletter to friends, family, and anyone who you think might enjoy reading this. And please urge other people to subscribe to this Newsletter. This Newsletter is free to the first half million people who sign up.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a very Happy Hanukkah. I spent Christmas 1968 in a foxhole in Vietnam, so at this time of year my thoughts and prayers always go out to the men and women serving in hostile areas around the world. Home safe.

And Happy New Year to all.

November 2009

A Note from Nelson DeMille
I hope everyone else had a wonderful summer. I spent the whole summer, including weekends, writing. And just last week, I wrote the two most beautiful words an author can write: The End.

Yes, I am finished with the sequel to The Lion's Game. And as I reported in my last newsletter, the title of my new book is The Lion short and simple, and it leaves a lot of room for my name in big letters, as you can see here.

Actually, this cover was finished before I finished the book, but now it has all come together book and cover, and even a publication date, which is June 8, 2010. That's a long time away, but it's worth the wait. The Lion is every bit as good as The Lion's Game, and in many ways better. John Corey, NYPD, returns at the very top of his game, and his wife and partner, FBI Special Agent Kate Mayfield has her hands full trying to rein in her rambunctious husband as they pursue Libyan terrorist Asad Khalil who escaped their grasp in The Lion's Game. This book is so good I actually read it myself.

The Lion will be on the shelves in time for Father's Day, graduation, and summer vacation. It would also make a great belated Mother's Day gift. And, of course, for the one or two million people whose birthday is June 8, what a special gift this would be a book born on the same day as your friend or loved one.

On to other subjects: as I also mentioned in my previous newsletter, my last novel, The Gate House is now available in trade (large-size) paperback. This is a nice, easy-to-read format, and is only slightly smaller than the hardcover edition for about half the price. Included in this edition of The Gate House is Chapter One of The Lion. At no extra charge. And six months before publication date.

Also now available is the trade paperback edition of Wild Fire, the previous John Corey novel, which also includes Chapter One of The Lion.

Please look for (and buy) both these new editions at your local bookstore or from your favorite online book source. And don't worry if you've already read The Gate House or Wild Fire; if you're like me, you can't remember what you've read, and it will all seem new and fresh.

As I said earlier or did I not say? I'm going to post Chapter One of The Lion on my website but I'm also going to do something bold and different: I'm posting the last chapter of The Lion on my website. That's right I'm giving away the end. So, you can read Chapter One, and Chapter Forty-seven, then decide if you'd like to buy what comes in between. Or, you can make up your own story about what came between Chapters One and Forty-seven. Hell, it might be better than my version.

All right, just kidding the last chapter remains a state secret. But you can read Chapter One of The Lion (to be published in June 2010) by clicking here, or in the trade paperback editions of The Gate House and Wild Fire, available now in bookstores and online retailers.

Now that I'm done with The Lion, I am joining the growing ranks of the unemployed, and to fill my days, I am re-opening my website mailbox so that my readers can email me here with their thoughts, advice, criticism, praise, or questions. I try to answer mailbox emails, but sometimes the volume is overwhelming. Still, I'd like to hear from you, and if you don't hear back from me, write to your mother she always responds. Kids not so much.

I like to give movie news in my newsletters, but it's been pretty quiet since I last wrote. Basically, the books that were in development The Charm School and The Gold Coast remain in a holding pattern. Columbia/Sony, who own the motion picture rights to The Lion's Game and Plum Island (both John Corey novels), have expressed an interest in revisiting these projects. Stay tuned.

Sometime after my unemployment checks run out, I will begin my next novel. As of now, I have a great title Captain and a really terrific cover, but I have no idea what the book is about. Sea captain? Airline captain? Army captain? Police captain? The cover is blue and gold, with my name in big red letters, and a big black question mark where the artwork should be. Publication date, according to my astrologer, will be May 17, 2011. More on this in my next Newsletter.

That's it for this Newsletter. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and peaceful Thanksgiving. Despite the economy and the world situation, we have much to be thankful for. And please remember our troops stationed around the world in your thoughts and your prayers as you gather 'round the holiday table.

August 2009
A Note from Nelson DeMille
Nelson DeMille
I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer despite the weird weather patterns around most of the country. Here on Long Island, we're experiencing record rain and low temperatures, but I'm stuck in my writing room six or seven days a week this summer so I don't care. And it's all about me.

In my last Newsletter, I told you about the problem I had with my government check from the Bestselling Author's Relief Fund (BARF), but since then, the government has declared me Too Big To Fail, and has sent me, in lieu of a bailout check, a note of encouragement, telling me to hang in there.

Meanwhile, I'm taking advantage of the Cash for Clunker Books program. I've sent the Treasury Department dozens of old books that I didn't like (no, I won't name the authors) along with a signed statement saying the books were clunkers. Now I think I'm supposed to buy better books, send the receipts to the government, and get a check. I'll let you know what happens.

The Lion's Game
Back in April, I said I was working on the sequel to THE LION'S GAME. I'm still working on it, and I can report that it's a great book and a worthy successor to THE LION'S GAME. I also have a title THE LION. Short and simple, and it leaves enough room for my name in BIG letters. If you haven't read THE LION'S GAME, please do so before THE LION is published next June in time for Father's Day!

In April, I also mentioned that my last novel, THE GATE HOUSE would be issued in paperback in November. A small change here THE GATE HOUSE will be issued in trade paperback. This is the hardcover-size paperback that so many people like because the type is bigger, and the price is smaller than the hardcover. Please look for this in November in bookstores or your favorite online book source. This trade paperback edition of THE GATE HOUSE will include a preview chapter of THE LION for free!

Also, as I mentioned, my last John Corey book, WILD FIRE, will be issued this fall in the trade paperback size edition. Included in this edition will also be the preview chapter of THE LION, and John Corey's recipe for Pigs-in-a-Blanket, space permitting.

So, to recap: the trade paperback of THE GATE HOUSE and WILD FIRE will be issued this fall and will include (at no extra charge) a preview chapter of THE LION. THE LION hardcover will be published in June 2010.

The Charm School
And now some news from Hollywood: One of my earlier, and most successful novels, THE CHARM SCHOOL is moving closer to the big screen. Bristol Bay Productions, with Frank Marshall, as producer, have hired Ericson Core to direct THE CHARM SCHOOL. They also have a screenplay by Frank Pearson, and they have begun casting. This is exciting news, and this is a very talented and smart team, so I know they'll be calling me about playing one of my characters in the movie.

If you haven't read THE CHARM SCHOOL, it's available in paperback, audiobook, and e-book, and you might want to cast the characters in your head, and look for a good part for me. I do alpha males really well.

There's more news about making my books into movies, but I'll wait for further developments, which I'll report in my next Newsletter.

For my summer reading, I've received an advance copy of SOUTH OF BROAD by Pat Conroy, published by Random House/Nan A. Talese, and I highly recommend it. It will be released Tuesday, August 11.

For your summer reading, I recommend any of my novels, all of which (except THE GATE HOUSE) are available in various paperback formats, including an edible edition. Most of my books are also available in audio and a variety of e-book formats. And for poolside reading, don't forget that e-book devices, such as the Kindle and Sony Reader are waterproof and can be read underwater. (Kidding!)

I wish all my readers and Newsletter subscribers a wonderful summer and good summer reading.

April 2009

A Note from Nelson DeMille

This is my first Newsletter since December, and I've spent the last three months writing the sequel to The Lion's Game. I have no title for the book as yet, so I call it Lion's Game II. LG II is coming along and I'm enjoying revisiting my old characters John Corey, Kate Mayfield, the agents and bosses at the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, and Corey's old nemesis, Asad Khalil, aka, The Lion. Khalil is nastier than ever, and he's back in the U.S. to settle some old scores from The Lion's Game. The first score he intends to settle is with John and Kate. This publication of LG II is scheduled for June 2010, in time for Father's Day.

More publishing news: The Gate House sold very well, and it was listed by Publisher's Weekly as the #15 bestselling novel of 2008. I want to thank all my readers who bought this book and made it such a big bestseller. And I congratulate all the authors who had the first 14 bestselling novels, and I wish them continued success. Actually, I wish they'd retire, but I don't want to sound petty.

The paperback edition of The Gate House is scheduled for publication in November, and if you liked the hardcover edition, you'll like the paperback even more because it's cheaper. Also included in the paperback of The Gate House will be Chapter One of Lion's Game II at the end of the book. So, for this reason alone, it's worth buying The Gate House again.

More publishing news: The last John Corey book was Wild Fire, which is still available in mass market paperback. But this fall, Wild Fire will be available in the larger, trade paperback edition, and included in this larger paperback will also be Chapter One of Lion's Game II, plus a new author's foreword.

To recap: Chapter One of my work in progress, which is Lion's Game II, will be available this fall in a) the paperback edition of The Gate House, b) the trade paperback edition of Wild Fire.

Moving right along to movie news: The producers of The Gold Coast are about to sign a major star to play the part of Don Frank Bellarosa. I have been sworn to secrecy until the deal is done and the name is made public, but I can say that this is one of the best actors in Hollywood, and someone who is perfect for the role. When this actor commits, the rest of the cast should fall into place very quickly. I'll put out a Newsletter when this is a done deal.

I've received a rather nice check from BARF the Bestselling Author's Relief Fund which I deposited into a bank that failed. The FDIC Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation sent me a check to cover this loss, which I invested with a brokerage house that also failed. The Treasury Department sent me a bailout check to cover my lost investment, and I sent this check to the I.R.S. to help cover my April 15 taxes. The I.R.S. has just notified me that my Treasury Department check bounced. I think we have a problem.

****

I hope everyone had a happy and joyous Easter and Passover season. Happy Spring!

A Note from Nelson DeMille

Again, thanks to everyone who put THE GATE HOUSE on bestseller lists all over the country.  The book continues to sell very well, and many people tell me they are buying multiple copies to give as holiday gifts.  This is an excellent idea; books are a wonderful, relatively inexpensive and thoughtful gift.  People especially enjoy an autographed copy, so if you haven’t been able to get to one of my booksignings, you have my permission to sign my name on gift books – or your own book for that matter.  And add a nice inscription.  Just spell my name right, and don’t make any grammatical or spelling errors in the inscription.  Thanks.

On the subject of signed books, I’d like to thank all the people who came out to my booksignings.  You were all terrific, laughed in the right places during my talk, asked great questions, waited patiently in line to get your books signed, and some of you even brought gifts.  Authors only see their fans if they do booksignings, and I look forward to these occasions.  I’m always impressed with the people who read my books, and this reminds me of why I write, and it connects me to the people for whom I am writing.

No news on the movie front except that my agent is getting a lot of calls from Hollywood about THE GATE HOUSE, and also about THE GOLD COAST, the movie rights to which are already owned by Bregman Productions.  So, we’re trying to put together a co-production deal for both books to see if we can get them both on the silver screen, sort of like Godfather and Godfather II.  The major obstacle seems to be my insistence that I play the role of John Sutter.

I’ll keep you updated on the progress of those projects as well as my other Hollywood projects.

Meanwhile, my agent has gotten an offer from the New York City Ballet to turn my John Corey books into ballet performances.  (I’m having trouble picturing John Corey in tights, but Kate Mayfield in a tutu might be interesting.)  Anyway, these books would be interpreted through dance – the dancers don’t talk much – and this would eliminate most of the obscenities.  But maybe Corey could flip the bird now and then.  I need to think about this.

THE GATE HOUSE
has generated thousands of emails through my website, and once again I am overwhelmed with your warm and flattering comments.  My mother drummed into me the concept that I had an obligation to answer every piece of mail I received, but this was before email, and I’m not sure what Mom or Emily Post would advise today.  My publisher advises me to start writing my next book, and so I have.  I’m having fun with the new John Corey, and I’ll keep everyone posted on my progress and the likely publication date.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a good read, I can suggest some terrific books by great authors, starting with me.  Here are my previous books in the order they were published: BY THE RIVERS OF BABYLON; MAYDAY; CATHEDRAL; THE TALBOT ODYSSEY; WORD OF HONOR; THE CHARM SCHOOL; THE GOLD COAST; THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER; SPENCERVILLE; PLUM ISLAND; THE LION'S GAME; UP COUNTRY; NIGHT FALL; WILD FIRE.

These books, now in paperback, make great stocking stuffers.  Or, buy them all and give them as gifts in a box as The Complete Works of Nelson DeMille.  Don’t forget to autograph them.

I’ll get back to you on the other books and authors that I recommend.

The holidays are upon us, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, a Happy Chanukah, a Happy Kwanza, and a New Year filled with peace, love, good health, and all good things.  And don’t forget our men and women serving overseas and in military hospitals, and keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel THE GOLD COAST.

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her Mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer -- Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal. In THE GATE HOUSE, acclaimed author Nelson DeMille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore -- a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results.

Welcome to the Gold Coast, that stretch on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America. Here two men are destined for an explosive collision: John Sutter, Wall Street lawyer, holding fast to a fading aristocratic legacy; and Frank Bellarosa, the Mafia don who seizes his piece of the staid and unprepared Gold Coast like a latter-day barbarian chief and draws Sutter and his regally beautiful wife, Susan, into his violent world. Told from Sutter's sardonic -- and often hilarious -- point of view, and laced with sexual passion and suspense, THE GOLD COAST is Nelson DeMille's captivating story of friendship and seduction, love and betrayal.

A Note from Nelson DeMille

First, thanks to all of you, THE GATE HOUSE has debuted on the New York Times bestseller list at #1.  And thanks to me, too, for writing such a great book.  THE GATE HOUSE has also appeared at #1 on other national and regional bestseller lists, so this isnt a fluke.

Ive received thousands of emails through my website mailbox, and I wish I could respond to all of them, especially the snarky ones, but its not humanly possible, so, this Newsletter has to suffice.

For those who wrote me that they didnt like THE GATE HOUSE, sorry, but you were in a distinct minority.  The main negative complaint was that the book went on too long.  The most common praise was that it went too quickly.  So, there you are.

Most of THE GATE HOUSE reviews in newspapers and magazines were excellent, but one or two were lukewarm, and those reviewers are not getting invited to my annual Salute to Book Reviewers, which I host on a private yacht in the Caribbean every January.  I hope they get the message.  The most idiotic review I received was written by Charles Taylor in Newsday, which is my local newspaper.  You need to read this review to appreciate what John Updike meant when he said, Reviewers are like pigs at the pastry cart.  Mr. Taylors very weird review can be read by going to the Newsday website, click here.

A confession: I once met Charles Taylor at a fundraiser for Talentless Book Reviewers (he was the honoree), and when he got up to receive his award I ate his pork chop.  So, maybe that explains the bad review.

I get a lot of questions in my website mailbox and most of them could be answered by perusing my website.  You can also read my old Newsletters in the archives.  The most frequently asked question is: Are you bringing back John Corey? Yes, in my next book which is a sequel to THE LION'S GAME. This book is only four chapters long, but they are loooong chapters.

Recently I was blogging on Barnes & Noble Center Stage. Click here to view.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came to my book signings in the tri-state New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut area.  You were all terrific, and I hope you enjoyed the evening as much as I did.

I had a book signing at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, something Ive never done before, and it was fun.  This was a joint signing with my Grand Central Publishing colleague, David Baldacci, whose new book, DIVINE JUSTICE, will also be a #1 New York Times bestseller.  David was fun to be with, and the folks at Foxwoods were wonderful hosts, and the attendees were terrific, especially those who came directly from the cocktail lounge.  Its not every book signing where you can drink, gamble, and smoke.  Dont get me wrong I love bookstores, but, well, there are no blackjack tables or bars in most bookstores.  But maybe thats just as well; I left a few hundred dollars with the house before my wife pulled me out of there.

In the spirit of giving thanks, it is forty years this month since I returned from Vietnam, and I count every day as a blessing and a gift.  Someday Ill write about my homecoming, but in the meantime please pray for our men and women stationed in combat zones around the world as the holiday season approaches.

I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving, filled with family, friends, peace and love.

Best regards,

Nelson DeMille

Since my last Newsletter, the financial markets have been in crisis, and Congress has approved a $700 billion bailout. An important earmark in this bill is the Bestselling Author's Relief Fund (BARF), which I heartily support. So, please write your congressional representatives and thank them if they voted for BARF. If they didn't, then reprimand them for not sending your tax money to bestselling authors who made some bad investments. I'm waiting for my bailout check.

Actually, books sell well in hard economic times -- or at least, that is the conventional wisdom in the publishing industry. The theory is that people tend to stay home and read more since they don't go out to dinner or sporting events, and so forth. This actually did happen after the Crash of 1987 and in earlier tough times. So, if you're looking for an escape from the bad news and the presidential campaign, turn off the TV and radio, burn the newspaper in the grill, and buy a book.

As I said in my last Newsletter, my latest novel, THE GATE HOUSE, will be released in hardcover tomorrow, October 28th. THE GATE HOUSE is a sequel to THE GOLD COAST, which has just been reissued in mass market paperback and the larger trade paperback edition. Both these stories, THE GATE HOUSE and THE GOLD COAST are excellent escapist reading, and their themes of money, greed, seduction, betrayal and murder are very timely.

On the last weekend in September, I attended the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) convention, which was held in Mobile, Alabama. Independent bookstores all over the country are struggling to survive the tough competition from chains and online retailers. The men and women who own and run these stores are a dedicated and knowledgeable group of people who truly love books, and I felt honored to be invited. You probably get a lot of your books online or in a chain bookstore, but if you have an independent bookstore in your area, give them some of your business too.

Also, if you happen to be watching "The View" this Thursday, October 30th, they'll be giving a copy of THE GATE HOUSE to everyone in the studio audience. The audience will be told that they're getting a fifty-acre Gold Coast estate, so when they get a book instead, they'll be really surprised, and you can watch them get a big laugh at the joke.

I've just launched the redesign of my website with new bells & whistles. Be sure to check back regularly, as there will be contests and a video Q&A in the weeks to come.

Okay, this is my last Newsletter until sometime after the election and before Thanksgiving. Remember to stop at a bookstore on your way to or from the polling place. In the last chapter of THE GATE HOUSE I predict the winner of the 2008 presidential election, and you'll want to see if I'm right.

Enjoy this beautiful fall season.

Best Regards,

Nelson DeMille

A Note from Nelson DeMille

img
Well, the summer is over and the presidential campaign season has begun. Book sales (especially fiction) traditionally take a dip every four years during the presidential race, which is why I decided to publish my new novel, THE GATE HOUSE, on Tuesday, October 28, a week before Election Day. There is a method to this madness, and if I remember what I was thinking, I'll share it with you. Meanwhile, let's all buck this silly slump in book sales for this election and pre-order THE GATE HOUSE (click here) or run out and buy it on October 28. The book is 688 pages long, and I guarantee that if you throw it at your TV set during the election returns, you'll knock out the picture. The book will survive.

THE GATE HOUSE, as you may know is the sequel to THE GOLD COAST, and as I mentioned in the last Newsletter, Grand Central Publishing has reissued THE GOLD COAST in the large trade paperback size, and will reissue the standard paperback on October 1. Both editions have a new cover, a new Author's Introduction, and a new Twenty-first Century price. You don't need to read THE GOLD COAST before you read THE GATE HOUSE -- you can read them concurrently or in reverse order -- it's only important that you buy both books. I've got a two-year old who'll be in college in 16 years.

Costco has done a wonderful promotion of the reissued GOLD COAST and if you get their newsletter you've seen this and seen the great review, by J. Rentilly, and also seen some very nice things written about me by Pennie Clark Ianniciello, Costco's book buyer.

I spent the summer outlining and researching my next novel, which will be the sequel to THE LION'S GAME, featuring John Corey, NYPD (ret.), currently with the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force. I've already begun the book and in the first chapter of the sequel Corey kills his nemesis from THE LION'S GAME, Asad Khalil. I think that was supposed to come at the end of the book, so now I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I need to rewrite Chapter One.

Anyway, I'm very excited about this book (as yet untitled - any suggestions?), and I'm happy once more to be spending my days with John Corey and Kate Mayfield -- especially Kate.

My Newsletter generates hundreds and hundreds of responses from you, and as I've said, I read each and every one of them, and I wish I could reply, and it's frustrating that I don't have the time to do so, but I appreciate all the emails and I thank you for taking the time to write. I get a much needed ego boost from the letters, but I also get taken to task by some readers for my use of profanity. As one lady wrote, "I read WILD FIRE three times and counted the F-word thirty-six times."

I need to say here that my original manuscripts contain no profanity whatsoever. But Grand Central Publishing has an editor known as the "F-Guy," who peppers my manuscripts with four-letter words. I would end this practice immediately, but it's been brought to my attention that the publisher has this right, as per the small print in my contract.

Having said that, I will speak to the "F-Guy" about this and try to clean up the next John Corey book. In fact, at the beginning of Chapter One in THE LION'S GAME sequel, John Corey says to his boss, "I am going to find that dastardly blighter, Asad Khalil, and kick him in the shins."

A side note here: I did a booksigning this summer with other authors to raise money for the East Hampton Public Library. I love libraries -- you know, those places where they give away my books for free. I mean, East Hampton is one of the wealthiest communities on the planet, so I think the residents who live in twenty-million dollar summer homes can buy their books. But I digress. At the signing, I met Alec Baldwin, of all people, and we chatted about his past involvement in the movie version of THE GOLD COAST. That's a long story, but I need to say here that despite what people may think of his politics or his personal life, he is a charming man, and as down-to-earth as any actor I've ever met. And I don't say that just because he loves my books -- he liked NIGHT FALL the best -- but I say this because he's an astute reader and he's bigger than me -- see the photo in my Photo Gallery.

Okay, so that's about it for this time. I'll get out another Newsletter before the October 28 publication date of THE GATE HOUSE.

Meanwhile, click here for my publicity schedule. I'm not doing much of a cross-country booksigning tour this time -- I need to work on the sequel to THE LION'S GAME -- but if I'm in your area, drop by and bring a copy of this Newsletter. You'll go to the front of the signing line and I'll tell you a funny story about Alec Baldwin.

Thanks for all your cards and letters and for your support over the years. And remember, no matter who wins the presidency on November 4, the other guy will lose.

Best regards,

Nelson DeMille
